If only Bush had done this when he had the opportunity. We would have withdrawn from Afghanistan in a year and likely wouldn’t have invaded Iraq. This was a monumental political gamble for Obama, and he bet right. He now has freedom and cover to withdraw from Afghanistan, has leverage to push for a cleanup in the ISI, and has provided new legitimacy for the democratists in the Arab Revolution. He has gone a long way toward healing the injury done to American power and credibility by Desert One in the Carter years. Domestically, he’s cut Republican opposition down to size. Imagine, if you will, Trump or Huckabee, or anybody on the right having the pure cojones to make a move like this. Who is ‘presidential’ enough to challenge this move? I’d hate to have to play poker against Obama. Skill and luck are hard to beat in a power player.
